“We, the Border Patrol Police, are not meant to just hold guns. We can also hold chalks and wield knowledge…We give children intelligence and wisdom so that they can apply it to their lives.” Near Surin’s biggest border crossing to Cambodia, on land marked by decades of war and skirmishes, Thailand’s Border Patrol Police have set up a school to provide free education to children of both countries. With hundreds of Cambodian families crossing into Thailand to look for work, the Border Patrol Police has gone a step further in setting up a school in this historically unstable area to cater not just to Thai children from nearby villages but Cambodian children whose parents have crossed into Surin for a better life.
